March For Life
This past Friday hundreds of thousands of people came together in Washington for the National March for Life, and before that we celebrated the “Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of the Unborn.” A couple of years ago, we had a major victory in the fight to protect infants from the sin of abortion with the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. However, this victory has left many wondering why should we continue such events as the March for Life. Here is why.
Despite Roe v. Wade being overturned, there are still many in our country who are fighting to have abortion fully legalized. A number of states have passed legislation enshrining abortion as a “constitutional right.” This push demonstrates that the need now is not simply to overturn Roe v. Wade but to open people’s eyes to the reality of what abortion truly is. We need to help people to see that abortion is a sin, not a right, and why this is so.
God created every human being in His own image and likeness. This imago Dei is not about physical resemblance but that we are created out of love and for love. We are called to that sacred exchange of worship, offering heart for Heart. This means that every heart, every life, is something sacred, something meant for worshipping and glorifying God. We therefore sin whenever we reject and try to destroy that sacred gift.
But God’s love is still greater than this sin. There are plenty of options out there to help mothers in need. May we offer prayers and fasting to assist mothers to resist the pressure on them from others and help them with God’s grace to choose life rather than abortion. The Church offers services to help mothers in need, and works with partners in mission such as Gabriel Project to provide further help. May we work continuously to eradicate this great evil of abortion from our country and our world in order to uphold the sacredness of human life!
