Anointing of the Sick
The Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament instituted by Christ to strengthen those suffering from serious illness. Since ancient times, the Church has anointed the sick with blessed oil, a practice later known as “Extreme Unction” when it was primarily given to the dying. However, this sacrament is intended for anyone facing grave illness, bringing spiritual healing, peace, and courage.
Through anointing the forehead and hands, the priest prays for God’s grace, mercy, and strength. If a person recovers, they may receive it again if they fall seriously ill. This sacrament unites our suffering with Christ’s passion and offers graces to resist despair.
When received before death, it completes our earthly journey, just as Baptism began it and Confirmation strengthened it. In this sacrament, the Church intercedes for the sick, and the recipient, in turn, contributes to the sanctification of the Church and the salvation of others.
